According to a recent report, traditional TV and home video will continue to dominate Kenya’s advertising industry, maintaining its stronghold until 2027.

The PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Entertainment & Media (E&A) Outlook report forecasts that the combined value of traditional TV and home video will reach USD 430 million (Sh63.25 billion) in 2026, reflecting a growth of USD 12 million (Sh1.77 billion) from this year’s USD 418 million (Sh61.49 billion).

Nonetheless, the report anticipates that internet advertising will rapidly gain ground and is poised to bridge the gap, reaching USD 429 million (Sh63.11 billion) by 2026.

It suggests that by this time, the margin between traditional TV and home video and internet advertising will narrow to just USD 1.2 million, paving the way for internet advertising to claim the top spot in subsequent years.

In addition, the report predicts a significant shift in advertising trends, with music and radio (valued at Sh21.48 billion) surpassing newspapers and consumer magazines (valued at Sh21.33 billion) in advertising space by 2023. It also foresees video games outperforming newspapers and consumer magazines in the same year.

Despite these shifts, the report underscores that internet access will continue to be the largest segment in Kenya’s E&M market throughout the forecast period.

The growth of the video game sector in Africa, particularly in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, can be attributed to Africa’s youthful and tech-savvy population.

Remarkably, 40% of South Africa’s population engages in gaming, while Nigeria and Kenya follow closely with 23% and 22%, respectively. Notably, the majority of gamers in African markets prefer mobile devices for their gaming experiences.

Furthermore, the report outlines a promising future for the Entertainment and Media (E&M) industry in Africa, highlighting the potential of the metaverse and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

According to Meta, the metaverse has the potential to make substantial contributions to the economies of Sub-Saharan African countries like Nigeria and Kenya, with estimates suggesting it could generate approximately USD 40 billion (Sh5.8 trillion) in economic activity.

Podcasting is a fast-growing form of storytelling. Today there are numerous platforms offering podcasts on various topics – music, politics, current affairs, sports, art, motivation, health, law and a lot more.

I realize that I spend a considerable amount of time each day listening to podcasts on various platforms. It’s at time quite a strenuous job figuring out what you want to listen to.

To make this a little easier, each week I will be sharing a podcast I liked and information on where to get it from. You may use this segment to figure out what to listen to.

To kick us off is BBC’s ‘Death in Ice Valley.’

This is a story of a woman popularly referred to as ‘the Isdal woman.’ The podcast is produced by BBC and NRK (Norwegian Public Broadcaster).

“Some people take their secrets with them when they die, and some graves hold more secrets than others…” so begins the chilling narration that takes us back to 1970 when the remains of a badly burnt unidentified woman were found in a remote spot, Isdal (Ice Valley), near Bergen in Norway.

Her body is surrounded by small artefacts: a watch, some drinking bottles, expensive jewellery. All these items have had their identifying characteristics removed, and there are no labels on the woman’s clothes.

Initially, the police reported the case as suicide, but more evidence perhaps point to espionage activity.

Norwegian journalist Marit Higraff and Neil McCarthy for the BBC, investigate who the woman was, where did she come from and what was she doing in Norway? Is someone somewhere missing her?

This real cold case allows listeners to provide witness evidence.

The podcast itself is beautifully atmospheric: doomy music with a wailing female vocal gives it an unsettling tone, and the sound of pattering rain in the first episode is used to great effect.

It’s a headphone experience; immersive storytelling. This is a mystery, told in the clue-by-clue manner of an Agatha Christie novel.

Will McCarthy and Higraff solve this 50-year-old mystery? Will we find out who the woman was, what she was doing in Norway, Who killed her and why?

Each week, a new episode is released on BBC Sounds (you can download it from Google Play), you can also listen to them on the BBC website. You can also find it on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

It’s currently on Episode 12.

2016 is definitely a good year for women. The glass ceilings are being “smashed” in the words of US Democratic Party candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton. She is almost definitely going to make history by becoming America’s first female President. This though will come at a time when the UK already has a female president and the UN expected to have a woman as it’s Secretary General as well. The good year for women does not just end in the political world.

After financial thrillers that took the world by storm through exposing cut-throat business tactics going on in Wall Street through movies such as Wolf of Wall Street, Equity shows that money is actually not a “dirty word” to women and that they can actually pull equal if not bigger strings to get it and enjoy everything that comes with it.

It’s been described as a ” shrewd tale about women on Wall Street and the glass ceiling, corruption and back-stabbings they face from their male co-workers and one another.”

The movie stars Anna Gunn who also starred in the TV series Breaking Bad. The main casts in the film are also women with men only playing secondary roles. Other casts include Alysia Reiner & Sarah Megan Thomas. The screenplay is by Ammy Fox.

Joey Muthengi is a voice that has graced our radios for quite sometime now. A voice I fell in love with immediately she replaced Eve D’Souza  as the Hits Not Homework host on Capital fm alongside Soulo (now hosted by Mishy Amina who has an equally great personality). She has graced our TV screens appearing on several local productions aired on KTN and M-Net and I must say she is a prolific actor.

TV hosting though might be a little too ambitious for her at the moment. Not that I can do it better but to replace someone of Sheilah Mwanyiga’s calibre on TV you got to bring more than your uptown swag which I must say she has. Sheilah had her way of connecting with her audience…she had this natural charm and charisma that could endear her to a 58 year old woman like my mother and still make a 14 year old love her show…things Joey needs to work on.

Her reception has been what I would call “lukewarm” if the comments on social media are anything to go by.

Valentine Lihanda says: “Nothing against bt was so much better ” on twitter and Roy Kohodha also had this to say:” needs to get back on ASAP is so boring…” and there are so much more just follow #TPF6 on twitter.

My facebook friend Polite Sweetness had this to say : “Joy doesn’t Mek TPF fun Kama Sheila…” and somebody else commented: “truth be told #joy is atotal bore period” …. She must have been so boring that they din’t notice how to correctly spell her name which is Joey (pronounced as jo~wi) anyway I din’t watch the show.

Joey also hosted the Snap Miss World Kenya in 2012 replacing Ingred Awuor who hosted the competitions initial shows. Ingred Awuor is a Supermodel from Kisumu and owns Blackdust Modeling Management.

If you don’t watch TPF like me coz of Churchil Live but you still want to catch up with what’s going on on the show make sure you follow Jemalito’s blog…she did a good thing with BBA The Chase and now she is on TPF’s case. Click here to read her blog. Did I say she is my cuzo? Now you know.

For now it’s Joey and let’s pray we grow to love her…all the best girl!! Apart from hosting Radio and TV shows, Joey is also a poet, musician and writer. Click here to read her blog, Joey’s Factory. She is sister to gospel artist “Holy Dave.”

Kisumu is celebrating the life and times of Nelson Mandela through a musical concert that features East Africa’s Jazz Maestro Eddie Grey, Hey Z and Kisumu’s Afro-fusion artist Xoul Afrique…Newest kid on the block Charlie wuod Awendo will also take the stage with Ohangla tunes. Read more here.

If you enjoyed reading this then you probably will enjoy reading “Secrets to dating older women” Click here to read that and if you want to know “Why men cheat on the women they love” click here.

I really did not intend to write about the whole #someoneTellCNN drama as I had already said all I felt was important on twitter and left blogging about that topic to armatures looking for cheap publicity.

Now I don’t consider Larry Madowo an armature blogger, despite the fact that I tend to believe that he is on the payroll of some companies he gives flowery coverage on his blog and at times even on air like Safaricom but that is story for another day.

Yesterday Larry engaged #KOT (Kenyans on Twitter) with a spirited defense of CNN’s coverage of the Saturday grenade attack at Machakos Bus Station saying that the burner used was appropriate in that context. Now for those who do not know anything about this topic; while reporting on the said development CNN used a banner that said “Violence Breaks Out in Kenya”.

The use of that banner enraged #KOT and soon #someoneTellCNN and #CNNapologize were trending at No.1 and 2 respectively world wide as Kenyans demanded an apology for a wrong depiction of their country by the international news channel.

In his unsolicited defense of CNN, Larry Madowo decided to take us back to journalism school (which I left three years ago) with lectures on the definition of violence according to wikipedia and a further lecture on writing headlines.

“Violence is defined by the World Health Organization as the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment or deprivation. This definition associates intentionality with the committing of the act itself, irrespective of the outcome it produces.”

In his argument CNN were justified to use the term “violence” as per the dictionary meaning which I believe if looked at in Isolation as Larry did would actually be okay. Having said that, I also remember passing my news writing class (don’t ask my grade) and learning a thing or two about writing news headlines (for both electronic and print media).

According to my little knowledge of English (which again I must say is beyond the average Kenyan), “Violence breaks out in Kenya” would mean that there were several acts of violence in different Kenyan towns as much as the grenade attack in itself was an act of violence. To me the headline portrayed the whole of Kenya as an unsafe place which was not the case!

My question to Larry (include David McKenzie and his editors) is: could there have been better headlines? For example: “Violence in Nairobi” (that is if the word violence was so appealing to them) thereby restricting the event to the actual place it took place. I tend to think that there were even better headlines for that development that did not involve use of the term “violence” e.g Grenade goes off in Nairobi, Terror attack in Nairobi and so on. The latter examples portray Kenya as a victim of violent acts of extremists which was the case as opposed to the headline used on air by CNN.

He went on to say that CNN were justified in the use of that term and that is why their editors did not apologize despite the numerous angry tweets which got their attention. If that were true like he claims, them why was the video withdrawn from CNN website? The only reason why CNN did not run an on-air apology (according to me) was the apparent damage that such an apology would cause to their credibility.

Anyway I get it, Larry Madowo has grown larger than the Kenyan media market and most probably this was his way of applying for an anchoring job at CNN by licking their dirty boots and dancing to the tune of white superiority.

What #KOT were demanding was fair reporting on African affairs and that was something commendable. I loved the patriotism I saw on the tweets. People asking tough questions like: why dint CNN report it as violence when a teenager shot dead several schoolmates in the US, why wasn’t the recent shooting of 16 Afghan women and children by a US soldier reported as violence, why did CNN report the 9/11 incident as terrorist attack and not violence in US?
