Low-cost airline Jambojet has ventured into cargo operations with the Dash 8-400 passenger aircraft to its eight destinations within Kenya; Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, Kisumu, Mombasa, Malindi, Ukunda, Lamu, and Goma in Eastern DRC.

A report by International Air Transport Association (IATA), the Air Cargo Market Analysis for December 2021, showed demand and growth in cargo capacity in Africa of up to 7.6 percent. Well above the long-term average growth trend of 4.7 percent.

‘’Jambojet has a fleet of 6 De Havilland Canada Dash 8 Q-400, and operates an average of 280 flights weekly across the network. Each flight has cargo hold capacity of 1.2tonne, most of which flies empty. With the introduction of cargo operations, we can seamlessly connect the Coastal destinations rich in fish and sea food to Nairobi,’’ Said Mr. Karanja Ndegwa, Jambojet Managing Director and CEO

Jambojet started the Nairobi-Goma in Democratic Republic of the Congo in September 2021, becoming the first low-cost carrier to fly the route, and also the only direct flight between Nairobi and the Eastern DRC city. The airline started with 2 frequencies weekly, which have since grown to 3.

This came after the signing of a four-part bilateral agreement between the Government of Kenya and that of the DRC covering investment, and policy development in several economic sectors including tourism, agriculture, education, energy, infrastructure development among others.

Jambojet has also signed agreements with airlines such as Kenya Airways and Astral Aviation that allow for seamless connection of cargo from local destinations to international markets. The Jambojet Cargo product portfolio includes JM General Cargo, JM Express, JM Pharma, JM Live, JM Fresh and JM Repatriation.

In a bid to diversify its product offering and complement its scheduled operations, Jambojet launched Charter services in October 2020 which allows one to charter a Jambojet aircraft to various destinations.

Since its inception in 2014, Jambojet, which is IOSA certified (IATA Operational Safety Audit registration), has achieved undeniable business growth with a fleet of 6 brand new De Havilland Dash 8-400 and has flown over 4.7 million passengers across all its destinations.

Regional low-cost carrier Jambojet has commenced operations to Lamu, becoming its fourth Coastal destination after Mombasa, Malindi and Ukunda.

The airline will fly from Nairobi to Lamu via Mombasa four times weekly with an introductory fare of KES. 7100 one way from Nairobi to Lamu. Mombasa to Lamu will start at KES. 4600 one way.

“Lamu County is undeniably one of Kenya’s top tourist destinations both for local and international travelers. With the ongoing LAPSSET project, we expect increased traffic into Lamu from tourists and potential investors. We want to ease their movement with the introduction of this route,” said Karanja Ndegwa, CEO & Managing Director, Jambojet.

Last week, the airline also commenced operations to Goma, DRC.

At the same time, Jambojet together with the Ministry of Tourism & Wildlife unveiled a new aircraft livery wrap. The branding, which will run for a period of one year, aims at promoting the conversation around conservation of the endangered sea turtle, and the dugong, a rare sea mammal.

“This journey will enable us to build a brand association between Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) and Jambojet and thus increase the destination’s appeal to more consumers in the domestic and regional markets. The Aircraft that we shall be unveiling today will showcase Magical Kenya to all the seven local destinations that the aircraft shall be flying,” said Betty Radier, CEO KTB.

A recent report by Oxford Economics and global Travel, shows that domestic and regional travel will dominate the tourism industry in 2021 compared to international tourism. Many destinations are expected to maintain their international travel restrictions for a large part of the year and affordability and safety concerns are also expected to encourage closer-to-home travel.

Speaking at the event, the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Hon. Najib Balala noted Jambojet’s contribution to promote local and regional tourism. “I must also take this opportunity to say that Jambojet has been resourceful in the recovery journey through provision of products and services that have made both domestic and regional travel more attractive,” he said.

The Director General at Kenya Wildlife Service, Brig. John Waweru, further acknowledged the Jambojet partnership in the #NowTravelReady campaign stating, “we are cognizant that the domestic Jambojet routes have key and unique KWS parks & reserves such as Lamu County that host the remarkable Kiunga Marine National Reserve. We have developed signature experiences across the KWS parks in all the Jambojet destinations to enhance the tourism product, open up the lesser visited destinations and add value to Jambojet passengers.”

Jambojet, together with the County Government of Lamu, KWS, Lamu Tourism Association, and various stakeholders will embark on a 4-day discovery tour of Lamu County with the aim of showcasing the new normal of travel, while encouraging people to travel.

Regional low-cost carrier Jambojet has entered into a partnership with the Kenya Tourism Board to promote domestic tourism.

The partnership involves branding one of Jambojet’s De Havilland Dash 8-400 aircraft for a period of one year.

“Last year we launched the ‘Now Travel Ready’ campaign to encourage domestic tourism as part of COVID-19 recovery. This partnership with KTB will further drive this conversation in a bid to revive the sector,” said Karanja Ndegwa, Ag. Managing Director, Jambojet.

The move is also part of Jambojet’s recovery strategy where it is looking to diversify its revenue generation through advertising placements.

Domestic tourism accounts for over 70 % of the Travel and Tourism sector in major economies globally. In Kenya, domestic tourists’ bed-night occupancy accounted for more than 50 % of the total bed occupancy from 2015-2018.

KTB CEO Dr Betty Radier lauded the local carrier for having contributed to the growth of tourism by enabling accessibility to tourism destinations in the country.

She said the partnership was among the many ventures the Board has explored with a view to growing the destination tourism offerings.

According to Oxford Economics and global Travel report (2020-2021), domestic and regional travel will dominate the tourism industry in 2021 compared to international tourism. Many destinations are expected to maintain their international travel restrictions for a large part of the year and affordability and safety concerns are also expected to encourage closer-to-home travel.

Jambojet offers various advertising options including the Jambojet website, boarding passes, tray tables, in-flight announcements, in-flight sampling, e-newsletter, headrest covers and flight itinerary branding.

The airline recently launched direct flights from Mombasa to Eldoret and Kisumu, as well as charter services in line with its strategic growth plan.

National carrier Kenya Airways (KQ), has unveiled, Economy Max, a product that allows customers to create additional personal space by booking a seat or a row next to them. Economy Max, a first of its kind for an African carrier, will be available for purchase between 48 to 3 hours before departure to all KQ customers purchasing Economy Class tickets globally.

According to a July 2020 IATA Study, travelers are seeking ways to feel more comfortable about flying again. This has led to increased accountability for airlines to ensure passenger confidence.

Julius Thairu, Chief Commercial and Customer Officer at Kenya Airways says that Economy Max will meet the evolving needs of travelers during the pandemic by offering the ability to purchase an empty seat or row next to them. “The world we live in has changed. As an airline, we continue to adapt to the evolving needs of our customers as we recover from the effects of the pandemic. Economy Max puts passengers in control of their experience and ensures that our customers have a choice as they enjoy their privacy with additional space to themselves. Economy Max is a continuation of KQ’S diversification and innovation to provide relevant products and services to our customers to improve the overall experience of their travels with us.” said Thairu.

Passengers can purchase Economy Max seats online and pay via credit card. Once purchased, a confirmation email will be sent to them with information about their flight and seat allocation.

Inspired by the Swahili word ‘kikao’ (a place of coming together), Kikao64 was conceived as a modern gathering place where people can work, connect and thrive, in a space designed to provide a fully serviced, flexible and conducive environment to increase business opportunities and provide access and exposure needed for success, especially for young people in Eldoret facing barriers, while also supporting non-profit organisations, athletes and startups in need.

Kikao64 offers members either daily, weekly, or monthly passes through an online booking system.

State-of-the-art amenities

Stylishly and sustainably designed, the new space is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities, including 100 fully serviced and spacious workstations, 3 private offices and 2 meeting rooms equipped with whiteboards and TV screens.

Kikao64 is supported by a dedicated on-site team of customer service professionals. In addition to being connected to one of the fastest and most reliable Wi-Fi and internet connections in Kenya, Kikao64 also offers auxiliary services such as printing and other key consulting services on company registration, legal, tax and audit matters and web design and social marketing.

Comfortable furnishings, an in-house café and set in a spacious garden, ensure that Kikao64 is a productive, friendly and efficient all-in-one place to get things done.

Responsive to Eldoret’s new needs

Kikao64 is a comprehensive response to Eldoret’s new high-tech community of entrepreneurs, start-ups, nonprofits, freelancers and creatives with a growing demand for flexible modern office spaces in their home town – Eldoret.

Environment friendly

For instance, the desks were built from reclaimed timber, the office spaces partitioned using recycled milk cartons, phone booths sound proofed using felt from old clothing and blanket lines, while the windows and door grills were made locally from wrought iron.

Additionally, the space runs completely on solar power to light the rooms and charge laptops while rainwater is harvested, filtered and used for general cleaning and sanitation, and garden irrigation. Meanwhile the staff vegetable garden is kept healthy and green with natural compost.

A culture of collaboration and community

Kikao64’s mission is to cultivate opportunities each new day for its community of individuals, businesses, startups and nonprofits to work, connect and thrive.

Members will have access to regular networking sessions, training workshops and special events ranging from guest speakers to art exhibitions to film screenings.

Kikao64’s ultimate strength lies in the quality of the people who work and gather there. With a diverse staff and vibrant, varied member community, Kikao64 is an example of the magic that happens when motivated people connect and are supported to pursue their dreams.

“Daddy, will you take me to the hill this weekend?” That’s a question I get every time we are driving from the house towards town with my daughter in the car. Part of the road from our house has a spectacular view of the majestic Riat Hills, in Kisumu. Since my first visit with her to Suzanne Owiyo Cultural Center some time in December 2020, it’s automatically become her favorite place in the city.

When my answer is to the affirmative she would quickly add “can we go with my friends too, please please daddy?” She will then look at me with those sweet four-year-old eyes that are so hard to resist. Her friends in this case are her cousins – it’s indeed true that cousins are the first friends we make.

Nadia loves this place mostly because she gets to enjoy jumping on the trampoline. She can do that all afternoon with little breaks to sip on her soda, to snack or a quick photo session with daddy. The facility has amazing views of the city’s skyline, the view of the lake from up here is spectacular. For her watching planes land and take off from Kisumu International Airport is usually one of the highlights of the visit.

A service fee of Sh. 200 is charged to access the grounds on weekends. The property with manicured lawns are perfect for picnics, or just unwinding after a hectic weekend with friends with the family. You can carry your own food and drinks to the grounds at no extra cost, or even cook your own meals at the site. You can also buy snacks and an assortment of soft and hard drinks on site. The service charge guarantees you plastic seats and a table, but it’s always a good idea to carry picnic seats during busy weekends.

“The Hill” as my daughter likes to call it also has private grounds that can be hired out for corporate or private events like weddings, parties or even concerts. The property is located near Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology (Riat College) on Kisumu – Kakamega Road and is easy to navigate to via Google Maps.

Next time you are looking for a place to unwind on a weekend, why dont you try out “The Hill.”

NAIROBI, 22ND SEPTEMBER 2020: Regional low-cost carrier Jambojet has partnered with various players in the travel industry to launch a campaign that will encourage domestic travel.

The campaign dubbed “Now Travel Ready” is part of the airline strategy to encourage air travel as the country begins its COVID-19 recovery process.

“With the launch of this campaign, we want to show our customers the new normal of travel. From the moment they leave their home, to when they get to the airport, arrive at their destination, the hotels they can stay at and the measures in place, as well as the activities they can take part in,” said Jambojet Head of Sales & Marketing, Titus Oboogi.

Jambojet has partnered with hotels in the 5 destinations they fly to including Swahili Beach Resort and Diani Sea Lodge in Diani; Ciala Resort, Grand Royal Swiss Hotel and Sovereign Hotel in Kisumu; Voyager Beach Resort, Pride Inn Hotels and Hotel Englishpoint in Mombasa; Turtle Bay Beach Club, Plan Hotel Resorts, Ocean Beach Resort & Spa and Luxury Springs Villas in Malindi & Watamu; The Noble Hotel and Naiberi Resort in Eldoret.

Jambojet resumed operations to five local destinations in July after the Government of Kenya lifted the ban of movement in and out of Nairobi, Mombasa, and Mandera counties.

Last week, the airline announced entry into charter operations to address emerging consumer needs and diversify its product offering.

You don’t want to know how many times I postponed my plans to visit this place. Every time I saw Dr Neema Mbaruk post photos of a group of guests she hosted or her morning rides to Osiri Beach, I would quickly slide into her DM and make promises of visiting the place – but never quite really took the initiative. At least I was constantly in the DM of pretty chic though ;-).

One Sunday afternoon, when Kenya Power had done their thing I decided to call and let her know that I was driving down. The direction was not too difficult to follow. Took the Kisian – Bondo road, and turned just after the bridge past Ongalo Mixed Secondary School, driving towards Osiri Beach. It’s an approximately 10-minute drive on a smooth murram road after you leave the highway.

If you are thinking about a gateway for the weekend, hanging out with friends in a secluded environment, private parties, or even weekend camping with family and friends then this is quite the place for all that and more.

Hearts, Palms and Memories sits on what looks like a four-acre piece of land that is still under development. A camping area, complete with restaurant, kitchen and dining area is however already complete. When complete the facility will host cottages too.

What’s most remarkable about this place is the fact that they have as much as possible not tried to interfere with nature. Natural rocks, lush green vegetation and amazing views of the lake are just but some of what you enjoy while here. The fish you will dine on was probably caught by a fisherman at Osiri Beach just that morning. The vegetables on your plate are grown right inside the same facility – talk about “from the garden to your plate.” It’s quite not rare for Dr Neema, a celebrated orthopaedic surgeon to be your chef for the day or waitress.

On this particular day, Peter Oposh Jabunde, a fellow simba was accompanying me, driving ahead in his Peugeot 406, while I followed behind on my 1997 Peugeot 405 Hunter blaring some loud reggae vibes. The dust, the loud music and the simbas were a sight to behold in the quiet fishing village (okay, I just exaggerated a bit). We stayed for dinner and the good doctor was kind enough to serve us pan-fried tilapia, chips, and some amazing tamarind sauce which I carried a fair serving of home because I could not have enough of it. Other than the sights, and food, the facility also offers an assortment of soft and alcoholic beverages. A beer is as cheap as Sh 300.

Driving back home in the evening, trying to beat curfew, I told myself I would not have spent my day better. Wondered why it took me so long to visit this place, but I will surely make a trip every time I feel like clearing my mind. I think I might even just buy a bicycle and talk to Neema to keep it down there for me – for those days I just want to go enjoy lazy rides in a fishing village, or just to find a new reason to be in her DM.
