On Monday evening, OPPO Kenya unveiled the all-new OPPO Reno8 series in the Kenyan market. The OPPO Reno8 5G will be retailing at Ksh 59,999 and the OPPO Reno8 will retail at Ksh 42, 999.
I have had the pleasure of having the OPPO Reno8 for about three weeks now and I have had some great experiences with the phone’s photography, videography and game-handling capabilities that make me recommend this device for anyone looking for an affordable high-performance mobile device.
Photography and Videography
You know you got a nice camera when your family and friends always ask for your phone when it’s time to capture those important memories. When I got the OPPO Reno7, my sister-in-law always said “Tumieni simu ya Dan ndiyo iko na camera poa.” (Let’s use Dan’s phone, it has a better camera)
But we now have the OPPO Reno8 which has an upgraded camera and photo and video processing capabilities. This device turns anyone into a professional photographer. It’s no wonder it’s been billed as ‘the portrait expert.’
I have had my device for almost a month now and I am totally in love with the camera. My favourite feature is the night photography feature.
Here are some of the very first photos I took when testing the camera (64 MP main camera setup and 32MP selfie camera).
The OPPO Reno8 5G has introduced the Sony IMX sensors into the camera setup to even allow for more light into the camera to capture the perfect selfies and portraits even in dim lighting conditions. While most camera sensors only capture RGB colour variations, the Reno8 5G has RGBW sensors allowing it to capture more light.
Compared to its predecessor the Reno7 5G the current device can capture up to 60% more light. This effortlessly powers your nighttime photography to new possibilities.
With the Sony IMX766 Sensor on the 50MP main camera and the Sony IMX 709 sensor on the 32MP selfie camera, your take on the night comes through with clarity and colour.
In addition to hardware upgrades, OPPO Reno8 5G comes packed with a series of portrait features driven by leading AI technologies.
- Ultra Night Video algorithm enhances the image quality, color expression, and facial performance in lowlight environments, delivering sharp and bright night portrait videos. It is automatically enabled for nighttime shooting.
- Ultra HDR Video mode prevents bright parts from over-exposure and enriches dark parts with subtle details, thereby producing natural portrait videos with vivid colors. It is automatically enabled in scenes with a large lighting ratio.
- Night Portrait leverages the industry-leading Turbo RAW algorithm to perform AI noise reduction in the RAW domain, delivering clear and pure portrait images.
Gaming
Other than photography, gaming is one of the uses of mobile devices that is fast gaining prominence with users. When choosing a good device for gaming you are looking for a fast phone, adequate storage, good graphics and a long battery life.
You will also be interested in fast internet connectivity when playing online games, a comfortable screen resolution. Ability to charge or boost faster even becomes a greater advantage…especially when competing online.
The OPPO Reno8 5G features the MediaTek Dimensity 1300 5G-integrated SoC. This has been built on the 6nm process, the octa-core SoC includes an ARM Cortex-A78 ultra-core that operates at up to 3GHz to deliver the ultimate computing power. It also comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB ROM.
What’s really impeccable about this device is that when playing a game or running applications that eat so much into your memory, the phone can virtually convert 5GB from the storage capacity into extra RAM for your seamless enjoyment.
This means no annoying lags when in the middle of an intense gaming experience. With the 80W SUPERVOOC charger, by plugging in your device for only 11 minutes, your phone can charge up to 50% of the 4,500 mAh battery capacity.
I know you might wonder what happens when you leave your phone overnight to charge when the phone has such a fast-charging capability. The phone has an optimised night charging feature that I feel I need to tell you about even as I am discussing gaming. The phone uses AI to learn from your daily charging routine so that it can control the charging speed at night and avoid overcharging.
Now, back to gaming, this phone only weighs 179 grams. This is very light even when holding for long straight durations. The thickness is 7.67 mm. When it comes to screen size, the Reno8 5G comes with a 6.4″ AMOLED screen size with a 90Hz refresh rate and 180Hz touch sampling rate, another ideal feature for gaming response.
Lastly, the OPPO Reno8 5G has the SGS EyeCare certification. This means that at all times your eyes are protected against harmful blue rays which means you get to enjoy a comfortable experience even when staring at the screen for long hours during gaming.
The Reno8 5g has a very immersive experience. The device has Netflix HD Certification and Amazon Prime HD video certification for maximum enjoyment when streaming online videos.
I am not such a big gamer, I mostly play the usual bike and car racing games and not for very long hours. My six-year-old son on the other hand is a gaming enthusiast, even at that age. The device I have is the OPPO Reno8 4G and even with that, we have had very enjoyable gaming experiences.
I look forward even to more enjoyment with my device and will be sharing more experiences here.
