Equitel Becomes First Virtual Mobile Network Operator to Launch 5G in Africa

Equitel has made history by becoming the first successful mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) to launch 5G services in Africa.

But what is an MVNO? An MVNO is a company that provides wireless communication services without owning the wireless network infrastructure.

Instead, they lease network capacity from existing mobile network operators and resell it to their customers under their own brand name. This allows them to offer competitive pricing and unique value propositions to their customers.

In this case, Equitel has partnered with Airtel, its host mobile network operator, to introduce cutting-edge fifth-generation (5G) capabilities that will provide faster and more reliable connectivity to businesses, communities, and individuals.

This new era of lightning-fast connectivity will enable customers to actively engage in the digital economy.

Equitel is already known as the leading mobile banking channel in Kenya, offering unparalleled convenience, accessibility, affordability, and ease of transacting through various banking channels.

Customers can send money from Equitel-to-Equitel lines for free and pay for goods and services through the One Equity Till Number at over 1 million merchants countrywide at no cost. Additionally, Equitel through “my life” offers a platform through which customers access informative content conveniently from their phone.

Equitel’s 5G service has been introduced across over 370 locations nationwide, including towns such as Mombasa, Nakuru, Nairobi, Athi River, Kisumu, Kakamega, Siaya, Eldoret, and Bungoma among others.

The 5G service will soon be extended to densely populated areas like residential neighborhoods, shopping centers, and central business districts in collaboration with the partner network.

To enjoy Equitel 5G services, customers need to have a 5G capable device supported by a 4G-LTE SIM card. If a customer is still using a 3G SIM card, they are requested to visit their nearest Equity branch, where dedicated Equitel representatives will be on standby to assist with the seamless transition.

Equitel’s commitment to delivering superior connectivity experience is further underscored by the introduction of enticing data bundle offers for its customers.

To mark this milestone, Equitel will offer a 100% bonus on data bundles every Wednesday and Friday. With Equitel’s 5G services, customers can expect faster and more reliable connectivity that empowers them to actively engage in the digital economy.
