Twitter has shut down its Africa office based in Ghana just four days after opening. Employees at the Accra-based office received a termination notice in their personal emails.
“The company is reorganizing its operations as a result of a need to reduce costs. It is with regret that we’re writing to inform you that your employment is terminating as a result of this exercise, ” read part of the notice.
The notice was sent in an email from the HR office in Dublin Ireland.
The staff at the Ghana office had just started working from the new offices in the capital after spending more than a year working remotely since the Africa unit was established.
Some of the staff had to move to Ghana from other countries across the continent and have now been left in limbo not knowing what steps to take next.
According to the mail, affected staff members will be placed on leave until their termination date on the 4th of December, 2022.
The office was created following an April 2021 decision by Twitter to expand its base to West Africa, choosing Ghana as its home on the continent, and noting that its decision is built on Ghana’s support of free speech and online freedom.
