When I saw a friend post a picture of the new Tecno Spark 9 Pro Sports Edition, I knew I wanted it. I immediately called a contact at Tecno and to my pleasant surprise, they had a device for me and had just not contacted me yet.
The thing about this phone that attracts you to it is the design. The same way I saw it and wanted it is the same feeling you will have when you see it on display at Tecno branded shops or online.
The main difference between this device and the Tecno Spark 9 Pro is the back design. The crystal blue design on the phone’s edges gently blends with the white that runs through the middle of the device’s back. And of course the BMW blue, purple and red rings around the main camera setup.
Lovely to look at.
This appealing cover design work is the product of Designworks, a BMW group company. The same company is responsible for coming up with design concepts for the German auto giant.
Tecno has recently been stretching the envelope when it comes to the creative design of the look and feel of their devices.
You definitely would remember what they did with the TECNO CAMON 19 Pro Mondrian Edition if you are a Tecno fan. It was created in collaboration with the Boston Museum of Fine Arts using polychromatic photoisomer technology.
The Tecno Spark 9 Pro Sports Edition is however not just about looks. It is also packed with a 32MP front camera and a 50 MP AI main camera set that delivers awesome selfies and photos even in low lighting.
My second favourite feature is the phone’s night photography capability which is aided by AI, delivering the most stunning shots at night. For videos, the phone can only record 2K videos on both cameras.
The MediaTek Helio G85 chipset and the 6.6″ 1080P Full HD large screen bring extraordinary fun and pleasure to your gaming and viewing experience. I have been using the device for about three weeks now and I am yet to experience unnecessary lags on the device.
This coupled with 4 GB of ram which you can extend with another 3GB of virtual RAM delivers a very satisfying user experience for a device at this price point. The internal memory is 128 GB which of course can be extended by a memory card.
Perhaps the only downside that I realized was that the phone’s refresh rate is capped at 60Hz. This is however not something that you will easily notice unless you are coming from using a device that has a higher refresh rate.
The device comes with an 18W type-c charger, a stylish back cover with open sides. I have never seen this before on another device. It also comes with basic wired earphones which I honestly have not used.
I think it would have been lovely to see the cover design incorporated into the accessories as well, but that’s something I can only wish.
Overall, I like the phone and I have gifted it to someone in my family who will be enjoying using it. If this sounds like the device for you, it’s only on sale for Ksh 21,500 from Tecno branded outlets and e-commerce platforms.
