Safaricom CEO, Peter Ndegwa, on Thursday announced that the telco’s Chief Consumer Business Officer, Sylvia Mulinge will be leaving the Waiyaki Way outfit on 30th September 2022 after a sixteen years stint that saw her serve in various senior roles.
Sylvia joined Safaricom in 2006 and has held various senior roles including General Manager Enterprise Business Unit and Director Consumer Business Unit, before assuming the role of Chief Customer Officer in 2018. In July 2021, she took up the role of Chief Consumer Business Officer.
“She has been an Executive Committee member (EXCO) for the last 9 years, where she has offered leadership and been part of many of Safaricom’s successes. More recently, she has been instrumental in steering the agile transformation of the commercial units,”said Ndegwa in a statement.
She is instrumental in setting up two key businesses in Safaricom; Enterprise and Fixed Data.
Sylvia whose previous attempt to move to Vodacom Tanzania as CEO was blocked by former Tanzania President John Pombe Magufuli will now be occupying the corner office at MTN Uganda. She will be replacing Wim Vanhelleputte, who will take on the new MTN Group role of Operations Executive.
“Sylvia Mulinge becomes MTN Uganda CEO, joining from Safaricom, where she served as Chief Consumer Business Officer for the Group. A seasoned executive, she brings with her a passion for transforming customers’ lives using technology,” South Africa’s MTN Group said.
MTN Uganda, which has been rolling out services similar to those pioneered by Safaricom, will be relying on her extensive experience to grow the business. At Safaricom, she has been a champion of Digital Transformation.
Mr Dengwa said “she has been a purpose-led and impact-driven business leader,” who has lived the Safaricom Purpose of Transforming Lives of our customers using technology as an enabler of positive change.
