Eating Out in Kisumu -Sampling Bilie Restaurant

Bilie is Luo for “please have a taste.” Funny how you translate one word in Luo into a whole sentence in English. That’s however exactly how you feel when you see photos of meals from Megan Faith’s Bilie Restaurant – it’s like like they are begging you to dig in.

In this era of filters and photoshop though, you can not use photos as evidence of great taste. So after a while of seeing friends post photos of their meals from here, I decided to pay the place a visit.

The restaurant is situated at the junction of Tom Mboya Drive and Ridoch Road in Milimani, Kisumu. What impressed me a great deal is that there is quite a huge parking space in the compound which you normally don’t get in Kisumu restaurants outside major shopping malls. There is also a car wash at the parking area – so how about leaving with your ride looking a whole lot cleaner than you came in?

At the restaurant, you have the option of sitting inside the main dining area or on a shade outside. The tables made out of pallets add quite some beauty to the place.

Of course, you are probably asking what about the food – well the restaurant is known for authentic African dishes specializing in Western Kenyan cuisines. If you have the pallets for aliya (which is dried meat cooked in milk), obambla (dried fish – mostly tilapia), kamongo (lung fish), fresh tilapia, kienyeji chicken, osuga (managu) and so much more then this is the place. You can also order the Bilie special which normally comprises of a platter of fried beef with chips.

When I visited the place two weeks ago I had a plate of aliya which was served with ugali and some traditional vegetables. There is however a lot more than just traditional food, you will always find something that suits your tastebuds here – it’s great for family lunches on the weekends. During this period of COVID-19 pandemic, you can be confident of your safety as the restaurant adheres to the Ministry of Health Guidelines. How about you try it out this weekend and share your experience in the comments section.
