Controversial Flowerpots Removed From Kisumu Roads To Pave Way For Repairs

KISUMU, 27TH MAY 2020: The City Management of Kisumu has removed the controversial flowerpots on two major highways in the city’s CBD. The flowerpots were introduced in April to separate the main carriageways of Jommo Kenyatta Highway and Ang’awa Avenue from the cycling lanes.

The city is working on the introduction of a non-motorized transport (NMT) in the CBD covering the two highways and Oginga Odinga street.

Sources at the county government say the move is meant to limit the number of vehicles accessing the CBD while encouraging walking and the use of bicycles in the city.

The joys of motorists who were complaining of narrowed streets could, however, be short-lived as sources at City-Hall say the removal of the pots is a temporary measure to allow for repairs and markings on the streets.

“This temporary measure is to create space for recarpeting and marking of the road that is scheduled to begin from tomorrow by Kenya Urban Roads Authority, ‘ said a source at City Hall.

Residents have been complaining about the pots which took up an entire lane out of the two-lane street.

They should remove these nonsense. They better expand the road instead.

The JOMO Kenyatta Highway is unsuitable for this project. It either has to be expanded or the project moved to another road
