You can now say more with Twitter’s 280 characters

Ever had a moment where you had to rewrite a whole tweet just because the most creative thing you had thought of could not fit into 140 characters? That is now a thing of the past as the micro-blogging site today announced that it has increased its character limits to 280.

Once upon a time, Twitter told you “you’ve got to be smarter” if you used more than 140 characters in a tweet. Still wondering what I will use #280characters for.

Anyway this is my first tweet so let’s see how it goes…Oh I still have a few more characters left…………….

The change comes following a successful test conducted in September where Twitter allowed selected users to get limits longer than the usual 140 characters.

Looking at all the data, we’re excited to share we’ve achieved this goal and are rolling the change out to all languages where cramming was an issue.

-Twitter posted on their blog.

Twitter is however assuring you that the change will not result in a flooded timeline with long post. Actually their research showed that most people just wanted a few extra characters.

Only five per cent of Tweets sent were longer than 140 characters and only two per cent were over 190 characters. As a result, your timeline reading experience should not substantially change, you’ll still see about the same amount of Tweets in your timeline.

-Twitter on their blog.

Those who use the Japanese, Korean and Chinese versions of Twitter will however continue using 140 characters.
