We cannot blame a lawyer for the clients they represent. The law of natural justice dictates that every accused person has the right to be heard. That right includes legal representation. That means however grave the crime they are being accused of is, some lawyer will represent them.
Kenya has seen some very high profile people taken to court and charged with corruption or abuse of office. A significant number of them have been represented by Senior Counsel Ahmed Nasir Abdulahi. We might however ask ourselves, did they choose him because he is so good at his job or because he understands (or possibly has influence over) the system?
Some of the notable clients’ names include Embu Governor Martin Wambora, former Devolution CS Anne Waiguru, Ferdinand Waititu, Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho and Kakamega Senator Dr. Boni Khalwale.

The “Grand Mullah” as he is popularly known also represented KNUT in a legal tussle with TSC before dropping the clients midway through an appeal.
Earlier this year, one of his former clients, a Mrs. Rose Mbithe claimed that Ahmed Nasir asked her for a Ksh. 100 million to to help her in the case. An allegation which he denied while appearing before a tribunal investigating the conduct of former High Court judge Joseph Mutava.
As a former member of the JSC representing the LSK, Ahmed Nasir was hated for his “high handedness.” Appearing on Citizen TV’s “Big Question” on Tuesday night, lawyer Haroun Ndubi actually put him to task as to whether he used his influence at the JSC to determine how cases were handled by judges.
So would we say that the top dollar charging lawyer is so good at his work or is he just a crook in bed with the system?
That is not a question we can conclusively attempt to answer at this time but here is a bit of what Kenyans on Twitter think about the “Grand Mullah.”

Like I said, we are not crucifying a lawyer for the client’s he represents. Whether you decide to see him as a brilliant lawyer or a corrupt jurist is all up to you.
