For a long while there has been little going on the events front in Kisumu but it looks like finally there is a silent revolution happening especially when it comes to sports.

It all started with United Millers  sponsoring the Kisumu RFC. The team which is seeking to get back to playing in the Kenya Cup has seen matches played at the Mamboleo Showground thronged by supporters – both rugby lovers and girls who come to see boys in small shorts – and boys who come to see girls in small shorts too.

To a large extent this has been possible through the on-air noise championed by Kisumu’s Urban Radio 90.7 FM which is also partnering with Kisumu RFC to give both on-air and social media publicity for all their matches. This has been more effective with Barcadia Lounge also using their Whatsapp group to rally clients to show up for the games.

The well organized rugby events have been a lot of fun for those who have attended the matches. There is always a lot of nyama choma, booze and good music from Soundbox Entertainment, Dj Gordo, Dj Slim and Urban Radio’s ThisIsChito .

If you have never been to the rugby evenst then look out for the next few ones coming before the main show stopper which will be the Dala Sevens tournament.

Then there was the celebrity hangout over the weekend at Club Buccaneers…

It’s however not just about rugby as I found out this past weekend. Pacho 360 put up another entertaining event that brought back life to the Jommo Kenyatta Grounds basketball courts.

The “Biro Lich” basketball tournament was great entertainment with lots of music from Dj Gordo, Dj Slim, Dj Herbo and Urban Radio’s ThisIsChito. Fans thronged the pitch and not even the bad weather could stop the action on the court and the entertainment off the pitch.

Off the pitch were the loud bikers from Lakeside Outriders led by Dave Ngiri Odira and the newbie biker Hon. Eddy Anayo.

Urban Radio 90.7 FM supported the event with an on-air campaign and a couple of trophies for winners in various segments.

United Millers, Barcadia Lounge and Urban Radio have committed themselves to be at the center of this revolution but there is still more space for local corporates and organizations doing business in Kisumu to come in.

This week Urban Radio, Club Signature and Acacia Premier Hotel are sponsoring the Kisumu leg of Sauti Sol’s Live and Die in Afrika Kenya tour. The celebrated boy band will on 30th of April stage a major performance at Simba Club.

Urban Radio and Pinecone Hotel are also sponsoring the Kisumu leg of Churchil Live in collaboration with Laugh Industry on the 6th of May 2016.

If there is one lesson for event organizers it’s that Kisumu people are willing to turnout for a good event. Publicity and organization is everything.

Is this the beginning of better days for Kisumu events? Only time will tell.
